The main character, Eddie Kagle (played by Paul Muni), is a notorious gangster who is killed by his criminal associates. Upon arriving in Hell, he refuses to accept his fate and strikes a deal with the devil, known as Nick (played by Claude Rains). Nick offers Kagle a chance to return to Earth in the body of Judge Frederick Parker (also played by Paul Muni), a respected and incorruptible judge.
As Judge Parker, Kagle sets out to use his newfound authority to further his own criminal ambitions. However, his plans are complicated when he begins to develop feelings for Judge Parker's fiancée, Barbara Foster (played by Anne Baxter), and experiences moral conflicts about his actions.
Throughout the film, Kagle grapples with the conflicting influences of the devil and his own conscience, represented by an angel named Wilkins (played by Hardie Albright). As he becomes increasingly torn between good and evil, Kagle must ultimately decide whether to embrace his newfound redemption or succumb to his former criminal instincts (1946).
