The story revolves around Esther Blodgett (played by Judy Garland), a young, aspiring singer with dreams of making it big in Hollywood. She works as a band singer and performs at various events. One night, she has the chance to meet Norman Maine (played by James Mason), a famous but troubled actor whose career is on the decline due to alcoholism.
Norman is captivated by Esther's talent and believes she has the potential to become a star. He persuades her to come to Hollywood and offers to help her career. Esther is hesitant at first but eventually agrees, and she is given a new stage name, Vicki Lester.
As Vicki's career begins to soar, Norman's continues to decline, partly due to his ongoing struggles with alcohol. He becomes increasingly despondent and resentful of Vicki's success. Their love story is marred by Norman's self-destructive behavior and the strain it puts on their relationship.
The film explores the dynamics of stardom and the sacrifices that come with fame, as Vicki's career continues to rise while Norman's spirals out of control. As Norman's troubles reach a breaking point, Vicki faces a heartbreaking decision about her career and her love for him (1954).
