The film is set during World War II and follows the misadventures of two soldiers, Alvin Korwin (played by Jerry Lewis) and Vic Puccinelli (played by Dean Martin), stationed at a military base in the United States. Alvin is a bumbling, clumsy private who often finds himself in humorous predicaments, while Vic is a smooth-talking ladies' man with dreams of becoming a successful entertainer.
Alvin and Vic have a close friendship, but their contrasting personalities frequently lead to comical conflicts and misunderstandings. Alvin struggles to follow orders and often gets into trouble, much to the frustration of their commanding officer, Sergeant McVey (played by Mike Kellin).
Meanwhile, Vic tries to use his charm to impress the base's beautiful female population, including Judy (played by Polly Bergen), the sergeant's secretary. However, his romantic pursuits often backfire, leading to hilarious consequences.
As the film progresses, Alvin and Vic find themselves involved in various comedic scenarios, including mistaken identities, practical jokes, and attempts to outwit their superiors. Despite their antics, they also face moments of genuine drama and camaraderie as they navigate the challenges of military life.
The climax of the film occurs during a talent show organized by the soldiers, where Vic hopes to showcase his singing talents and Alvin gets caught up in a series of mishaps. The talent show sequence is a highlight of the film, featuring musical performances, slapstick comedy, and memorable routines from Martin and Lewis (1950).
