Claire Cummings (played by Leslie Brooks) is a beautiful and ambitious woman who works as a society columnist for a newspaper. Despite her charming facade, Claire is ruthless and calculating, willing to do whatever it takes to climb the social ladder and achieve success.

When Claire's wealthy husband, Carl Hanneman (played by John Holland), dies under suspicious circumstances, she uses her cunning and charm to deflect suspicion away from herself. Claire frames her lover, Les Burns (played by Robert Paige), for Carl's murder, convincing the police and the public that he is the guilty party.

As the investigation into Carl's death unfolds, Claire's manipulation and deceit escalate. She seduces and manipulates various men, including her editor, Al Herrick (played by Russell Hicks), and her former lover, Stanley Mason (played by James Griffith), in order to further her own interests.

As Claire's web of lies unravels, she becomes increasingly desperate to cover her tracks and maintain her facade of innocence. However, her ruthless actions catch up with her, and she finds herself caught in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the authorities.

In the climax of the film, Claire's true nature is exposed, and she is confronted with the consequences of her actions. As the truth comes to light, Claire's carefully constructed world crumbles around her, leading to a dramatic and suspenseful conclusion (1948).
