Professor Brenner (Bela Lugosi), a well-respected psychology professor at a university. Unknown to his colleagues and students, Brenner leads a double life as Karl Wagner, a cunning crime boss. To conceal his criminal activities, Brenner runs a charitable mission for the Bowery's homeless and needy during the day.
At night, however, Wagner transforms into a sinister figure. He operates a criminal organization and uses the Bowery Mission as a cover for his illegal endeavors. The mission becomes a hub for criminal operations, with Wagner employing ex-convicts and engaging in activities such as drug trafficking and fencing stolen goods.
The plot thickens when Wagner's criminal empire comes under investigation by the police. Meanwhile, one of Wagner's henchmen, Fingers Dolan (played by John Archer), becomes suspicious of the professor's true identity. As tensions rise, Wagner must work to protect his criminal enterprise while maintaining his façade as a respected academic (1942).
