The story begins when a young American, Joe Hammond (played by Steve Cochran), arrives in Munich, Germany. He stumbles upon a traveling carnival and becomes entranced by the lively atmosphere and the people who work there. Joe decides to join the carnival and quickly becomes involved in its operations.

The carnival is run by a shrewd and charismatic showman named Marco the Magnificent (played by Martin Milner). Marco is in charge of the carnival's various acts and attractions, which include fortune tellers, acrobats, and a beautiful equestrian performer named Willie (played by Anne Baxter). Marco and Willie have a complicated romantic history, and their relationship adds tension to the carnival's dynamic.

As Joe becomes more involved with the carnival, he develops romantic feelings for Willie. However, his interest in her puts him at odds with Marco, leading to conflicts and jealousy within the carnival's tight-knit community (1954).
