The story is set in the small town of Dunwich, New England. The film opens with a priest named Father Thomas (played by Fabrizio Jovine) committing suicide by hanging himself in a cemetery. This act of suicide inexplicably opens a gateway to Hell, and the dead begin to rise from their graves.
A psychic named Mary Woodhouse (played by Catriona MacColl) experiences a vision of Father Thomas's death and is deeply disturbed. She shares her concerns with a local reporter, Peter Bell (played by Christopher George). Together, they embark on a mission to close the gate to Hell and stop the living dead from terrorizing the town.
As they investigate, they encounter various disturbing and supernatural events, including reanimated corpses, grotesque deaths, and malevolent forces that threaten their lives. They are also joined by a psychiatrist, Dr. Gerry (played by Carlo De Mejo), who assists in unraveling the mysteries behind the opening of the gateway to Hell.
The group faces a series of surreal and nightmarish encounters, including an eerie séance and confrontations with the undead. Their journey to close the gate to Hell leads them to a climactic and otherworldly confrontation with malevolent supernatural forces (1980).
