The story begins with the mysterious arrival of a seemingly abandoned ship in the New York Harbor. When a team of investigators boards the ship, they discover a gruesome scene: the entire crew has been killed, and the ship's cargo holds a bizarre and deadly cargo.

Amid the wreckage, the investigators find a shipment of large, green, pulsating eggs. These eggs are soon revealed to be of extraterrestrial origin and contain a highly dangerous and infectious substance. When one of the eggs is inadvertently opened, it releases a substance that causes anyone it touches to explode in a burst of bloody violence.

A former astronaut, Commander Ian Hubbard (played by Ian McCulloch), is brought in to help investigate and contain the alien threat. He, along with a government agent and a marine biologist, embarks on a mission to discover the source of the eggs and prevent the alien creatures from spreading and causing further destruction.

The film follows the team's efforts to uncover the origin of the alien eggs, the nature of the deadly substance they contain, and how to stop the extraterrestrial threat from causing a global catastrophe (1980).
