The film is set in a Hollywood film studio, where the production of a murder mystery film titled "The Death Kiss" is underway. During the filming of a scene involving a shooting, the actor playing the victim, Myles Brent (played by Edmund Burns), is actually shot and killed.

The investigation into Brent's murder is led by Detective Lieutenant Sheehan (played by David Manners), who initially suspects that the shooting was part of the film's production. However, as Sheehan delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of deceit, jealousy, and betrayal among the studio personnel.

Among the suspects are the studio's owner, Joseph Steiner (played by Alexander Carr), who has financial troubles and stands to benefit from Brent's death; Tom Avery (played by Edward Van Sloan), the director of "The Death Kiss," who had a falling out with Brent over a romantic rivalry; and other members of the cast and crew who had grievances against Brent.

As Sheehan interviews the suspects and pieces together the evidence, he faces numerous obstacles and red herrings that lead him down false trails. Meanwhile, tensions rise within the studio as paranoia spreads among the employees, and rumors of a curse surrounding the film production begin to circulate.
