The film begins with the arrival of Evelyn Heath (played by Anne Baxter), a beautiful but troubled young woman, at the home of her distant relatives, the Proctors. Evelyn has recently recovered from a nervous breakdown and is invited to stay with the Proctors to aid in her recuperation.

Dr. Dan Proctor (played by Scott McKay) and his wife, Lee Proctor (played by Ruth Warrick), welcome Evelyn into their home. However, it becomes evident that Evelyn's presence begins to disrupt the seemingly peaceful household.
