Walter Burns, the editor of a newspaper, learns that his ex-wife and former star reporter, Hildy Johnson, is about to get remarried to a bland insurance salesman named Bruce Baldwin (played by Ralph Bellamy). Walter is determined to win Hildy back both professionally and personally, especially when a big news story breaks involving the impending execution of a man named Earl Williams (played by John Qualen).
Walter convinces Hildy to cover the story for one last time, delaying her departure for her honeymoon. As Hildy becomes increasingly involved in the unfolding chaos surrounding the Earl Williams case, the sparks fly between her and Walter. The fast-paced dialogue, witty banter, and the constant whirlwind of events create a classic screwball comedy dynamic (1940).
