The film begins with an unexplained phenomenon where the recently deceased return to life as flesh-eating zombies. The cause of this phenomenon is left ambiguous but is possibly linked to a space probe that had recently returned from Venus.
The story follows a group of strangers who find themselves seeking shelter in an isolated farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania. The group consists of Ben (played by Duane Jones), the film's primary protagonist, Barbara (played by Judith O'Dea), and several others, including a family with a sick daughter.
As the night unfolds, the group realizes the gravity of the situation and the need to work together to fend off the growing horde of zombies. They board up windows and doors and try to fortify their position against the undead.
Tensions arise within the group as they face the horrors of the undead outside and the claustrophobia of confinement inside the farmhouse. Personal conflicts and disagreements among the survivors add to the already intense atmosphere.
The film explores themes of fear, prejudice, and human nature under duress. Ultimately, the night ends tragically for most of the characters as the relentless zombies attack the farmhouse (1968).
