Michel Marnay (Charles Boyer), a French playboy and painter, is traveling by ship from Europe to New York. Onboard, he encounters Terry McKay (Irene Dunne), an American singer. Despite Michel's reputation as a womanizer, the two strike up a charming and flirtatious conversation. Both are engaged to other people, but they find a genuine connection during the voyage.
As their time together deepens, Michel and Terry realize they have fallen in love. However, they decide to part ways and honor their prior commitments, agreeing to meet six months later at the top of the Empire State Building if their feelings persist.
Six months pass, and both Michel and Terry make their way to the Empire State Building for the reunion. However, fate intervenes tragically when Terry is struck by a car just before reaching the meeting point. She is left paralyzed from the waist down and doesn't reveal her condition to Michel.
Meanwhile, Michel, unaware of Terry's accident, waits at the Empire State Building. As he becomes increasingly despondent, Terry, now using a wheelchair, observes him from a distance without revealing her presence. The film unfolds with poignant moments of missed connections and the emotional toll of their unfulfilled love (1939).
