The story revolves around the eccentric Bullock family, a wealthy but dysfunctional group living in New York City during the Great Depression. The Bullocks are known for their lavish lifestyle and peculiar behaviors.
During a scavenger hunt organized by the Bullock sisters, Irene (played by Carole Lombard) and Cornelia (played by Gail Patrick), Irene discovers a "forgotten man" named Godfrey (played by William Powell) living in a shantytown along the East River. As part of the game, Irene decides to bring Godfrey back to the Bullock mansion as her scavenger hunt item.
Godfrey, a well-spoken and gentlemanly figure, agrees to accompany Irene to the mansion. However, once there, he quickly realizes the chaotic nature of the Bullock household. Despite his initial reluctance, Godfrey is hired by Irene's mother, Mrs. Bullock (played by Alice Brady), as the family's new butler.
As Godfrey settles into his new role, he becomes an integral part of the Bullock household, using his wit and charm to navigate the family's eccentricities. He forms a special bond with Irene, who becomes infatuated with him and begins to develop romantic feelings.
Meanwhile, tensions rise within the Bullock family as secrets are revealed and rivalries intensify. Cornelia, jealous of Irene's growing attachment to Godfrey, attempts to sabotage their relationship and discredit him in front of the family.
As the plot unfolds, Godfrey's true identity and past are gradually unveiled, shedding light on his reasons for living as a "forgotten man." His integrity and kindness ultimately win over the Bullock family, leading to a heartwarming conclusion where love triumphs over social status and wealth (1948).
