The film is set on the Pacific island of Pago Pago, where a group of missionaries, including Reverend Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston) and his wife, are trying to spread Christian values among the native population. However, the presence of a tropical rainforest and the challenges of the environment make their efforts difficult.
The narrative takes a turn when a boat arrives, bringing a diverse group of passengers, including a prostitute named Sadie Thompson (Joan Crawford). Sadie is initially allowed to stay at the mission, but conflicts arise due to her free-spirited and non-conformist nature. Davidson, a rigid and moralistic preacher, is particularly disturbed by Sadie's presence and lifestyle.
As the rain continues, tensions escalate between Sadie and Davidson, leading to a moral and psychological confrontation. Davidson becomes obsessed with saving Sadie's soul and preventing her from leading others astray. The clash between their opposing worldviews and desires forms the core of the film's dramatic tensioneration. While he worked on the "Stars and Stripes" (1932).
