The film is set on the Pacific island of Pago Pago, where a group of missionaries, including Reverend Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston) and his wife, are trying to spread Christian values among the native population. However, the presence of a tropical rainforest and the challenges of the environment make their efforts difficult.

The narrative takes a turn when a boat arrives, bringing a diverse group of passengers, including a prostitute named Sadie Thompson (Joan Crawford). Sadie is initially allowed to stay at the mission, but conflicts arise due to her free-spirited and non-conformist nature. Davidson, a rigid and moralistic preacher, is particularly disturbed by Sadie's presence and lifestyle.

As the rain continues, tensions escalate between Sadie and Davidson, leading to a moral and psychological confrontation. Davidson becomes obsessed with saving Sadie's soul and preventing her from leading others astray.
