The story is set during World War I and follows the character of Edgar Brodie (John Gielgud), a British novelist who is recruited by the British intelligence service to act as a secret agent. Brodie is given a new identity and sent to Switzerland, where he is teamed up with a seasoned agent named Elsa Carrington (Madeleine Carroll) and a jovial assassin named The General (Peter Lorre).
The trio's mission is to track down and eliminate a German agent who has been causing trouble for the British. The catch is that they are given misinformation about the identity of their target, leading to a case of mistaken identity and a series of twists and turns (1936).
