The film revolves around Sweeney, a middle-aged, struggling writer who's experiencing a midlife crisis. He's in the midst of a marital separation from his wife, Phyllis (played by Stefanie Powers), and is feeling disenchanted with his life. Sweeney is a somewhat aimless character, unsure of what he wants in life.
Things take an unexpected turn when Sweeney's wife, Phyllis, becomes involved with a charismatic and wealthy American named Max (played by Isaac Hayes). Max's arrival complicates Sweeney's life further, especially when he discovers that Phyllis plans to marry Max.
Sweeney finds himself in a difficult and comically awkward situation, as he tries to reconcile his feelings for his wife with his own newfound attraction to a young and attractive woman named Julia (played by Sabina Trooger). The film explores themes of love, desire, regret, and the choices people make in their lives (1975).
