The story begins with Bud Jones (played by Bud Abbott) and Lou Hotchkiss (played by Lou Costello), two bumbling and comedic characters who are members of a boys' club. The boys' club decides to go on a camping trip, but Bud and Lou accidentally miss their ride and end up wandering into the woods on foot.
As night falls, Bud and Lou stumble upon a creepy old mansion, rumored to be haunted. Unbeknownst to them, the mansion is actually the hideout of a group of escaped convicts led by a notorious gangster named Morgan (played by Douglass Dumbrille).
When the boys' club leader, Tommy (played by Tommy Bond), arrives at the mansion, he is captured by Morgan and his gang. Bud and Lou witness the kidnapping and decide to investigate further, unaware of the danger that awaits them inside the mansion.
As Bud and Lou explore the mansion, they encounter a series of comedic and spooky situations, including hidden passageways, secret rooms, and booby traps. Along the way, they encounter the eccentric Dr. Renault (played by Bela Lugosi), who adds to the mystery and mayhem.
Meanwhile, Morgan and his gang plot to use the boys' club members as leverage to evade capture by the authorities. However, Bud and Lou's comedic antics inadvertently thwart their plans at every turn, leading to a series of slapstick encounters and narrow escapes.
In a climactic showdown, Bud and Lou confront Morgan and his gang, using their wits and humor to outsmart the criminals and save the boys' club members. With the help of Dr. Renault, who turns out to be a friend rather than a foe, they expose Morgan's criminal activities and bring him to justice (1941).
