The story is set in 18th-century Europe and revolves around a French officer named André Duvalier (played by Jack Nicholson), who becomes lost while wandering the countryside and stumbles upon a remote, decaying castle. At the castle, he encounters a mysterious woman named Helene (played by Sandra Knight), who is seemingly trapped and unable to leave.
Helene appears to be tormented and terrified, and she claims to be under the control of a sinister force. André becomes entangled in her plight and is determined to uncover the truth behind the strange occurrences in the castle.
As he investigates further, André discovers that the castle is haunted by the ghost of a former resident, a cruel and vengeful nobleman named Baron Victor Frederick Von Leppe (played by Boris Karloff). The ghostly Baron seems to be the source of the supernatural events and the reason behind Helene's predicament (1963).
