The story revolves around a Texas cowboy named Steve Bennett (Guy Madison), who inherits an apartment building in Brooklyn, New York, from his uncle. The catch is that he must live in the building for a certain period to claim his inheritance. Eager to acquire the property, Steve heads to Brooklyn, bringing his laid-back cowboy lifestyle to the urban setting.
Upon arriving in Brooklyn, Steve finds himself in a completely different world from the one he's used to. The apartment building is home to a diverse group of characters, including a group of war widows and a quirky assortment of residents. Steve's presence brings a mix of culture clash and comedic situations as he navigates the challenges of city life.
Complications arise when Steve falls for Penny Whipple (Diana Lynn), the daughter of the building's manager, James P. 'Jim' Connors (James Dunn). The film explores the humorous interactions and misunderstandings that ensue as Steve tries to adapt to Brooklyn living and win Penny's affection (1948).
