The film opens with the Tramp (played by Charlie Chaplin), a homeless and impoverished man, wandering the streets of a bustling city. While searching for food in a garbage can, he discovers an abandoned baby boy left by a young unwed mother.
Initially unsure of what to do, the Tramp eventually decides to take the baby under his wing and raise him as his own. He names the child John, affectionately referring to him as "the Kid."
As the Tramp and the Kid form a makeshift family, they face a series of challenges and adventures together. The Tramp struggles to provide for the child, resorting to odd jobs and schemes to make ends meet. Meanwhile, the Kid grows up under the Tramp's care, developing a strong bond with his surrogate father.
Despite their poverty and hardships, the Tramp and the Kid find happiness and joy in their shared experiences and mutual affection. They create their own little world, filled with laughter, love, and moments of tenderness.
However, their idyllic existence is threatened when the authorities discover that the Tramp is an unfit guardian and attempt to separate him from the Kid. Desperate to keep his family together, the Tramp fights to prove his worth as a parent and protect the child he has come to love.
In a climactic sequence, the Tramp is reunited with the Kid after a dramatic chase through the city streets. With the help of sympathetic bystanders and a change of heart from the authorities, the Tramp is granted custody of the Kid, and they are free to continue their lives together (1921).
