On the day of her wedding, Annette is struck on the head by a heavy chandelier and, as a result, she has a vivid dream. In this dream, she envisions herself transported back in time to the 18th century, where she becomes the romantic interest of a handsome sea captain. In this alternate reality, she experiences various adventures and falls in love with the sea captain.
As the dream unfolds, Annette's subconscious explores her fears and desires, ultimately helping her come to terms with her feelings about marriage and the role she's expected to play as a wife. The film combines elements of comedy, romance, and fantasy as Annette's dream world contrasts with her real-life wedding preparations (1932).
