The film begins in ancient Egypt, where the Hebrews are enslaved and oppressed by the Egyptians. Amidst this turmoil, Moses (Charlton Heston), an adopted prince raised in the Egyptian royal household, learns about his Hebrew heritage. After discovering the truth about his origins, Moses witnesses the mistreatment of his people and eventually becomes their leader.
Moses, chosen by God, confronts the Pharaoh (Yul Brynner) and demands the release of the Hebrew slaves. However, the Pharaoh's heart is hardened, leading to a series of plagues sent by God to convince the Egyptian ruler to free the Israelites. The plagues include locusts, frogs, darkness, and the death of the firstborn.
Following the final and most devastating plague, the Pharaoh relents and allows the Hebrews to leave Egypt. The film then depicts the epic journey of the Israelites through the desert, guided by Moses, and the challenges they face, including the parting of the Red Sea.
On Mount Sinai, Moses receives the stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments from God. The commandments provide moral and ethical guidelines for the Hebrews as they embark on their journey to the Promised Land (1923).
