The story begins with Johnnie Bradfield (played by John Garfield), a talented boxer known for his quick fists and tough demeanor. However, Johnnie has a dark secret—he is involved in a criminal underworld and has ties to organized crime.
When a reporter threatens to expose Johnnie's criminal connections, he decides to flee the city and hide out in a rural training camp for boxers. There, he assumes a new identity and tries to start a new life away from the prying eyes of the law.
Meanwhile, back in the city, a murder occurs, and Johnnie is wrongfully accused of the crime. The police launch a nationwide manhunt for the fugitive boxer, who is now known by his new alias, Jack Dorney.
As Johnnie struggles to evade capture and clear his name, he encounters a group of troubled young boys who are living at a farm run by Sister Sissy (played by May Robson). Despite his initial reluctance, Johnnie forms a bond with the boys and becomes a mentor and role model to them.
As the plot unfolds, Johnnie's past catches up with him, and he must confront his demons and face the consequences of his actions. With the help of Sister Sissy and the boys, Johnnie sets out to uncover the truth behind the murder and prove his innocence.
In a climactic showdown, Johnnie confronts the real killer and clears his name, vindicating himself in the eyes of the law. With justice served and his honor restored, Johnnie bids farewell to Sister Sissy and the boys, knowing that he has found redemption and a new purpose in life (1939).
