The story revolves around the character of Brad Brady (Robert Preston), an ambitious wildcatter who arrives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the early 20th century oil boom. Brad is determined to strike it rich in the oil business and becomes involved in the rough and competitive world of drilling.
As Brad works to establish his oil empire, he encounters and falls in love with a local woman named Cherokee Lansing (Susan Hayward). Cherokee is the daughter of a wealthy oilman, John Brady (Pedro Armendáriz), who disapproves of her relationship with Brad due to their differing social backgrounds.
