in the near future, where a deadly virus has been accidentally released in a laboratory, leading to a global pandemic. The virus, known as MM88, is highly contagious and has a mortality rate of nearly 100%. As a result, the world's population has been decimated, and society has collapsed.

The film follows the journey of a diverse group of survivors who find themselves aboard a research ship called the "Chandler." Among the group are Dr. Meyer (played by George Kennedy), a scientist who may hold the key to understanding the virus, and Marit (played by Olivia Hussey), a woman who carries an immunity to the disease.

As the survivors search for a safe haven, they must contend with the virus's deadly effects, dangerous marauders, and the challenges of rebuilding society. They also discover that the virus has mutated, leading to the emergence of new threats (1980).
